That is the thing about D'Lacey - he is a very intellectual writer who does more than just entertain - he makes you think as well, and that is always a bonus, in any novel!

The Garbage Man wasn't supposed to be released until May 7th, however Mr. D'Lacey e-mailed me, last week, informing me that The Garbage Man is available now! [in the same e-mail, he attached his upcoming novella, which I read over the weekend - hence this "double header"]

Now, I hate to compare two novels, but for an author's 1st novel and his 2nd, there is always going to be comparisons. I loved Meat, and I was curious as to how D'Lacey's next novel would compare to it. To be completely honest, I did not enjoy The Garbage Man as much as I did Meat - I am not saying that The Garbage Man isn't an enjoyable read, it is, it just isn't as powerful [to me] as Meat.

I think that the problem lies in the fact that the book centers around creatures that are ultimately created out of our garbage and I just had difficulty placing myself into this reality. Still, D'Lacey has actually created some pretty terrifying creatures [my favorite being the centipede] You see, the creatures create themselves from whatever waste we dispose of and whatever they feed on becomes a part of them, helping them to grow stronger and faster [for instance, the centipede had legs that were made up of severed fingers and it's teeth were rows of knives] While not as good as Meat, The Garbage Man is still an enjoyable read and for what it is, it does not disappoint.

Let me leave you with my favorite line in the book: "Her closed eyes are two pregnant bellies in which twin eye-fetuses kick" How awesome is that line?!? Another cool thing, I thought, was one of the character's dogs were named Ozzy & Lemmy :-) Also, for any zombie fans out there, one of the characters is an avid video game player and there is a zombie game [Revenant Apocalypse] that he plays where he wields a katana - very cool - especially since he utilizes the game play when the garbage creatures start attacking. . .

On to The Kill Crew:

Set in a post apocalyptic society, The Kill Crew is the story of a group of survivors - primarily, the main character, Sheri, her 'not-really' boyfriend Ike, and a young girl by the name of Trixie.
The story is told in a 1st person narrative, from the viewpoint of Sheri.

After what is called The Long Silence - after which every car, watch, phone, etc has stopped working [Was the cause some sort of electro-magnetic bomb? No one knows for sure] - people have begun to change. While not exactly zombies, the story runs parallel with the zombie theme.

In The Kill Crew, the "zombies" are called Commuters, and similar to Matheson's I Am Legend, the commuters come out only at night. [Was it something in the water, a chemical, or some aspect of nature that has caused normal people to change into commuters? Again, no one knows for sure] Not everyone was affected though. About 200 survivors have walled themselves into what they call The Station, which consists of a city block of shops, apartments, 2 gun shops, 3 mini markets, 2 restaurants, and a wholesale warehouse... Every night a lottery is held and a group of survivors, known as "Crewers" head out beyond their walls to kill the commuters. [they say that if they kill 20 - 50 commuters a night, they will be 'crewing' for the next 20 - 30 years!]

Sheri is one of the best there is at 'crewing' - she carries two pump-action shotguns [named Kane & Abel] and a snub nose .38 named the paramedic] While her and Trixie [a young girl she has taken under her wing] are out "shopping" for supplies, during the day - when it's safe, Ike asks if he can tag along. While Sheri & Trixie are inside a store, Ike finds a vehicle that is still working - the three also discover that the commuters are evolving - these two things change the story drastically.

In The Kill Crew, D'Lacey has created some great characters, and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if The Long Silence came about due to some sort of ecological unbalancing.

As you can tell by the length of the story, this one is really just a novella, though I sincerely hope that D'Lacey plans to one day go back to it and expand upon it, as it is an awesome read! The 77 pages fly by and only leave you wanting way more!

The Kill Crew is D'Lacey's 1st book that is actually going to be published in America, and it is due out in paperback, on August 10th, so mark your calendars now!

Jason
thebonebreakerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11304800728906814919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1195483501141308526.post-3133332235225327922009-04-03T19:00:00.000-07:002009-04-03T19:20:27.107-07:00Bestial

Review by The Bone Breaker

First of all, for those who may be unaware, Bestial is a sequel to last year's Ravenous - a sequel that I have been counting down the days for! [Bestial just came out, this past Tuesday]

Until I read Ravenous, Animals [written by John Skipp & Craig Spector] had been my favorite werewolf novel - that quickly changed though - in fact, Ravenous pretty much changed my opinion of werewolves in general. [I had always been a fan of werewolves, however my tastes leaned more towards the vampires written by Lumley, Wellington, and Garton himself. . .]

Ravenous changed all of that - I began to long for Garton's werewolves to take on any of the above vampires [except for perhaps Lumley's, as his could no doubt hold their own, yet I digress]

Anyhow, it looks like I may soon be getting my wish!

You see, Garton has also written two excellent vampire novels [Live Girls & Night Life] and in Night Life, Garton introduced two private investigators [Karen Moffet & Gavin Keoph] who were hired by an eccentric horror novelist [think Garton himself - in fact, Garton even alludes to this by mentioning one of the author's previous books about alien women with fanged vaginas - for those who have read Garton's 1st novel, 'Seductions', this is all too familiar!] Anyhow, the author [Martin Burgess] hired Moffet & Keoph to look into the subject matter that he writes about - to see if perhaps any of it actually exists.

Well, it just so happens that in Bestial, Burgess has once again hired Moffet & Keoph and sent them to Big Rock, California to look into the rumors of 'werewolves' [that came about in Ravenous] So, do you see where this is heading?!? I definitely sense a cross-over in the works! [especially given the way Bestial ended]

Enough about all of that though - I am hear to review Bestial - I just figured that a little background information would benefit those who have never read any of the other books mentioned - in fact, it may just be best to give a little background on Ravenous - you see, Garton's werewolves are created by a disease/wolf virus [Lupus Venerus] the catch is that it is sexually transmitted, which makes it all the more interesting! Like traditional werewolves though, silver is their weakness [a huge weakness, in my opinion, as silver only has to be introduced into their system for it to be fatal]
So, there you have it - now on to Bestial:

For anyone who knows or who has researched Garton, then you are aware that he was raised a Seventh Day Adventist. This plays a huge role in Bestial. Whether Garton was using this novel as a means of catharsis remains to be seen, however it sure felt as if Garton was exorcising his Adventist upbringing, while writing this novel. [there just seemed to be a lot of "personal bashing" towards the church and one of its founders - Ellen G. White]

There is more to it than the author's past though, as all of it is integral to the plot of the story. [without giving too much away, the head werewolf, before he was turned, was also raised an Adventist, and he plans to use his knowledge of the church to exploit them - he plans to infiltrate the church, using it as a base of operations - he and his pack will then take over the businesses owned by the church members, their outreach programs, schools, hospitals, etc, spreading out into the surrounding communities - actually a very impressive and well thought out idea!]

Not only this, but a "new breed" has been born [with only a 3-month gestation period] which strengthens the werewolves' ideals that they are evolving and destined to become the dominant race!

I do not want to say anything more, in case I end up saying too much - if you doubt that this is an amazing read, then I encourage you to run out to your local bookstore and just read Garton's phenomenal prologue to this book - best 16 pages ever! :-)

If you have yet to read Ravenous, then I suggest that you read that one first [though you don't necessarily have to] I also suggest that you read Live Girls [which has nothing to do with Ravenous or Bestial] and its sequel Night Life [with the above mentioned investigators] as I feel that all of these books are heading towards an explosive cross-over event. I just know that we are going to see the werewolves from Ravenous & Bestial crossing paths with the vampires from Live Girls & Night Life. . .

Jason
thebonebreakerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11304800728906814919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1195483501141308526.post-62744604640278308862009-03-30T07:48:00.001-07:002009-03-30T12:38:47.874-07:00The Absence

Review by The Bone Breaker

Last year [before I had this blog] I read Hussey's debut novel, Through A Glass, Darkly and was thoroughly impressed! If you have not yet done so, I encourage you to check Hussey out!

In The Absence, Hussey grabs you from the very first page and doesn't let go! Not only has Hussey written another extremely creepy novel, he has crafted a tale about family in general.

In this story, Hussey has created a mother who is literally "absent" [you will learn exactly what that means] while raising her family and a cheating/alcoholic husband/father. The oldest son is struggling with the fault of causing the car accident that claimed his mother's life, and the youngest son is dealing with a friend's suicide - however these things soon become the very least of their worries. . .

When I read Through A Glass, Darkly, I remember comparing bits and pieces of it to Lumley & King - In The Absence, there is more of a Lovecraftian feel to the story.

Hussey's gift is, without a doubt, imagery - when you are reading his works, you feel as if you are right there, where the story is taking place. . . I obtained permission from the publisher to write this small excerpt from the book, so that you can see what I mean:

The kitchen door opened.

'Samuel?'

The she heard it: a soft mewling. She gripped the rabbit's foot.

'Mrs Sutton? Please, who's there?'

The resonance of the sound increased and, at the end of each intonation, a cry gargled. It had a synaesthetic effect on Elsie. It rattled in her ear and she saw the world around her quilted in a red gauze. Disinfectant, and the smell of sterile medical equipment, burned her nostrils. Her legs parted and she seemed to feel fingers delving deep inside. She looked down, half expecting to see a face, covered with a surgical mask, smiling up at her:

Nearly done Miss Cuttle. Nearly out.

But that is not what she saw.

It crawled across the kitchen tiles: a baby . . . of sorts.

Reaching the centre of the room, it stopped, turned its head one hundred and eighty degrees and blinked up at its mother.

Elsie did not scream.

Spewed into the world half-made, the foetus displayed all the motor functions it might have possessed had it been born the year before. There was even an air of curiosity, as it slapped the ground with a plump palm. With this movement, flecks of amniotic tissue fell from its shoulders and from the caul clinging to its head. Much of the sac membrane, however, remained fixed to the child, like strands of swaddling. Between its legs trailed a stunted umbilical cord. Snot bubbled from the slits that served as the infant's nose and threaded to the floor. Again, the mouth opened and mewling erupted over toothless gums. It called to her, this thing of her making, this creature that she had failed to destroy. It wanted its mother. It wanted to suckle.

'Shhh, shhh,' Elsie implored.

But her child would not be hushed.

'Are you hungry?'

'Ma . . . ma'

A remnant of sanity made itself felt. Elsie shot out of the chair and pressed her back against the sink. She watched as the child screamed and toppled onto its back. With a horrible snap its arms and legs inverted and it skittered, spider-like, toward its mother. Only now did Elsie see that the thing was sexless, like a doll.

'I'm sorry,' she shrieked. 'Please, I'm sorry.'

Little hands grasped her legs. With surprising force they dragged her to the ground. There was no fight in Elsie Cuttle, for this was God's judgment upon her. . .

I will leave the rest to your imagination - pretty freaky though, huh? [and this is only page 80!]

There are even more horrific things to be found within this novel - it is guaranteed to give you goosebumps!

So far, the best book of 2009!

Jason
thebonebreakerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11304800728906814919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1195483501141308526.post-5283266516955711612009-03-25T10:15:00.001-07:002009-03-25T10:25:29.512-07:00Frat House Massacre

Review by The Bone Breaker

Supposedly inspired by actual events, this film takes place at Newcombe University, in 1979.

The film opens with a literal massacre having taken place and then jumps back to a year earlier - June, 1978, where we meet Sean and his brother Bobby. Unfortunately, soon after we meet Bobby, he is involved in a drunk driving accident, leaving his older brother Sean to go off to college alone [something they had planned to do together]

While at college, Sean joins the Delta Iota Epsilon fraternity as planned - however, after realizing how sadistic his "brothers" are, he is not sure that he made the right choice in joining this particular fraternity, and decides to leave the fraternity, which of course doesn't bode well with his "brothers".

While all of this was going on, I felt sort-of confused - it felt like I started the movie in the middle, rather than at the beginning, as there was really no lead-up as to what was happening.

However, this feeling soon changed as the first 30 minutes were really just a build-up for what was to come - a story of revenge and a true brother's "bond".

I am happy to say that everything pretty much tied itself together in the end.

[well, sort-of - I wasn't completely satisfied at the end of the film - I would have liked to have had more background story on the surviving character]

As for the "feel" of the film - the filmmakers did an excellent job bringing the grindhouse aspect of films from the late 70's to this one - from the looks, clothes, sets, etc. I also thought the blood/gore was very well done/realistic.

Unfortunately, the trailer was removed from YouTube due to violating their terms, however you can visit the film's website at http://www.screamkings.com/ and view the trailer there.

Keep an eye out for this one, and in the meantime, I am going to check out Pucci's previous film - Camp Slaughter. . .

Jason
thebonebreakerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11304800728906814919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1195483501141308526.post-54106478996562524952009-03-23T19:40:00.001-07:002009-03-23T20:00:17.951-07:00Traumatized

Review by The Bone Breaker

Generally, I reserve short stories for when I am between novels - particularly if I am waiting for a book to arrive in the mail - that way, I know I will not be in the middle of a book, when a new one arrives. :-)

This wasn't the case with this collection of short stories. I had nothing on my plate when I started to read this collection, and it's a good thing as I was so captivated by the tales within, that a new novel would have had to have been set aside anyhow.

The first story, Bloodlines, is the longest at 47 pages. This is the story of four complete strangers who are invited to a mysterious gathering at a Southern Louisiana Manor, that was built in the 1800's, and has a sordid history behind it. It is a tale of greed. . .

Next is April - the story of a 17 year-old girl who has been experiencing mysterious blackouts. Upon awakening, her bedroom would appear to have been ransacked, and at one point she even found a butcher knife under her mattress. What is the story behind her strange blackouts?

[this one is a great story, however I felt that it ended too abruptly - I wanted more!]

* Note: Keeping in contact with the author of this collection, I found out, just the other day, that April may be made into a film - Cool! :-)

In The God Complex, Brown tells the tale of a cult that uses methadone wafers [during their weekly communion] to control its congregation through addiction and sedation. . .

From Midnight to One tells the story of an unhappily married woman, waiting for her husband to come home - while home alone, in the woods, during a storm, with possible intruders in the house. . .

[a very cool & creepy story]

In The Acquired Taste, a new parasite is discovered in some sushi - a parasite that affects the brain, turning people homicidal!

It's All True is an excellent story about an author who is investigating a haunted mansion that was once used as an amputation hospital during the Civil War. He enters with only a camera, a recorder, and a flashlight. . .

Live Through This is a scary story because it could really happen - it is a tale of a bedridden man and his obsessed lover!

In Two Miles, the main character of the story wakes up - seemingly in the middle of a desert - not knowing when or how he got there. After a mysterious wall and a billboard "screen" appear, showing scenes from his life, he begins to wonder if he has been drugged. . .

The End of Summer is probably the most memorable story in this collection. In this story, the title character - Summer - inherits her aunt's home, which is filled with all sorts of occult paraphernalia, including books, voodoo dolls, etc. After going through the home, bizarre deaths start to occur. . .

Feast of the Pigs tells the story of a drug pusher who is arrested in an alley, by a female officer. He is then stuck in a holding cell - his rights were not read to him, he did not get a phone call, and he was never fingerprinted. . .

[Screw it, I'm going to blow the whistle on this one - this one is a killer vampire story! Ahhhhh - sorry, I couldn't help myself]

In A Dead Ringer, on New Year's Eve, 1897, an unfaithful wife and her lover murder her husband. . .

[this tale was fantastic and has a very "Poe" feel to it]

House by the River tells the tale of a schizophrenic serial killer, as told by a lone survivor. . .

Althea's Last Dance is the story of a modern day Jack the Ripper. Althea is a stripper, who crosses his path. . .

[If you were wondering about the cover of the book - shown above - it is a butterfly charm, which is worn by Althea in this story]

Bliss Hill is the shortest story in this collection - only a mere five pages. In 1942, something is killing the chickens and cattle on a rural farm. . .

The last story, Zoe's Swan Song is about an egotistical superstar who is determined to become even more beautiful than she already is. . .

[this one is quite nauseating, and I mean that as a compliment]

In the very beginning of the book, Brown quotes Poe, Lovecraft, Nietzsche, and Francis Bacon - I am not familiar with Bacon, though I am certain that the others would be be proud of their influence upon Brown's bodies of work found in this collection. Brown is very descriptive and atmospheric. He utilizes very cool metaphorical sentence structures, and he has a knack for keeping you on the very edge, throughout his stories [which progressively get better, in my opinion]

If you enjoy short stories, then this collection is definitely recommended!

For further information, you can visit the author's website at http://www.traumatizedalexandersbrown.webs.com/

Jason
thebonebreakerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11304800728906814919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1195483501141308526.post-1564773194519097492009-03-20T20:38:00.000-07:002009-03-20T20:47:23.882-07:00Upcoming Film: The Landlord

A few days ago, I received an e-mail from Massive Ego Productions about their upcoming film The Landlord.

The Landlord is an independent horror-comedy film about a young man who grew up in a demon-haunted apartment building, and must choose between the monsters that raised him and the tenants they devour.

Here is a teaser trailer for the film:

For further information on the film, visit: http://thelandlordmovie.com/

Also, the Writer/Director/Co-Producer of the film - Emil Hyde - was kind enough to answer some questions for me, if you would like to read those over at http://www.horrordecor.net/scarsinterviews2.htm#landlord

The film is currently in post production and should be hitting film festivals and horror conventions, this Summer. We first meet Gordon and Reece - two of the sleazy guys running the Meadow View Inn, where they have cameras installed in the rooms, to spy on their guests having sex. . . That is, until Mr. Smith comes along.

When Mr. Smith checks into the motel with a hooker, Gordon & Reece sit back to watch, only to be shocked by witnessing Mr. Smith brutally stab the hooker to death. Not wanting to call the cops, because of their cameras and all, they hold Mr. Smith at gunpoint while deciding what they should do. Realizing what they were doing, Mr. Smith coerces them into filming snuff films, with him as the killer - and if you have seen the 1st film, then you know the rest of the story.

I actually enjoyed the first one, as it portrayed a horrifying situation for any wayward traveling couple. When I heard about the prequel, I was intrigued, but honestly was not expecting a whole lot, however I think that this one is just as good as the 1st one [not better/not worse] equally the same.

Being a prequel, I figured that I knew how it was all going to end. When the characters had hope, I did not - knowing that everyone was ultimately doomed. Still, I was pleasantly surprised and entertained throughout. Scott G. In one of the lighter moments in the film, the girlfriend catches a fish, and her boyfriend beats it to death with a wine bottle. After she comments that's disgusting, he replies, 'that's fishing babe' - I just thought that was pretty funny. :-)

Shortly after this, a storm starts brewing, so the couple decides to head inland, however with the tide now being lower than it was before, the couple ends up getting lost and ultimately getting stranded on an island, waiting for the tide to rise. By this time it has turned dark and it is now pouring rain, so the couple decides to seek shelter in an old farmhouse on the island. After searching the house and barn, they discover that there is no phone, and the barn is filled with marijuana [enough to put the owners away for 10 years, easy]

About this time, the owners of the house return home, to discover the intruders, and things rapidly deteriorate for the couple. I do not want to say anything further, so as not to give anything away - all I will tell you is, wait until you see what the woman does to one of the brothers and the father - whoa!

While this film is not as intense as it could have been, it is still worth watching [at least rent]

Until next time,

Jason
thebonebreakerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11304800728906814919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1195483501141308526.post-74435458516187241992009-02-23T13:50:00.001-08:002009-02-23T14:01:55.503-08:00Borderland

Review by: The Bone Breaker

Borderland was the 5th film shown in the "8 Films to Die For" 2007 After Dark Horror Festival.

The back of the DVD packaging states, "Although this is inspired by a true story, the events and characters depicted in this motion picture are fictitious." Huh?!?

A few days ago, I discovered that my neighbor is a voracious horror fan!
[living next to him for almost a year now, I am not sure how we never connected, other than the brief conversations here and there - mainly about tattoos, as he is a tattoo artist - we never realized our mutual obsession until last week] He arrived home, as I was getting my mail, and he had a lot of [tattoo] stuff to carry in, so I offered my help - as I entered his abode, I was treated to shelves and shelves of movies [easily 1,000+] I of course noticed the horror titles and to cut a long story short, I spent about an hour over there, discussing horror movies. He kept offering me movies to watch, which I've either already seen or already own myself. That is until I noticed the "8 Films to Die For" section - I mentioned that I had never seen any of those, and he suggested that I start off with this one. . .

As I mentioned above, the film is loosely based on a true story about a leader of a cult who practiced human sacrifice - it sort of has a Hostel /Turistas vibe to it.

In the beginning, the film opened strong, with two police officers entering an abandoned home looking for evidence of a cartel. What they find are tarot cards strewn about, blood, and a human jaw bone [amongst other things] While searching the house, the detectives separate. One is then ambushed and the other is forced to watch his partner be tortured and ultimately killed. You see, Phil is a self-taught director and this is his very first film, and I was completely blown away! [this is why I love movies!]

As you can tell from the title, there is much more of the story to be told - I believe that Phil's intention is a projected trilogy, though there is infinite growth potential. I sincerely hope that Phil finds the perfect distributor, who will not only finance the remainder of this project, but will give Phil free reign in his future endeavors.

But enough of all that, let's get on to the film, shall we?

The film takes place in Sugar Loaf, New York, where we meet the Baxter family. We first meet twin sisters Lara & Helen, who couldn't be more different from one another! Lara is a cynical, precocious Goth teen who seems obsessed with death and has an altar with a shrine to Anne Rice. Helen is the "goody-two-shoes" of the family - she is sweet, innocent, and also a vegetarian. We immediately feel the reality of these two as sisters, just in the way that they argue with one another.

While eating a holiday dinner, we meet the rest of the family. The father, who is the kind of guy who picks his nose with a q-tip and talks about seizing the day and grabbing the bull by the horns, and the mother, who is an old-world Bulgarian immigrant. We also meet Lara & Helen's brother, Raymond, who is a neuro-scientist.

One of the traditions of the Baxter family, is to talk about their accomplishments, that day, over dinner. Raymond went first, telling everyone that he just won 1st prize in a monthly neuro-science journal for a paper that he wrote on the benefits of lobotomy in treating obsessive compulsive disorder! Helen went next, telling everyone that she just lost 2 pounds. When it was Lara's turn, she informed everyone that she posted a picture of her butt on the internet - ha!
Over this dinner, we become completely comfortable in knowing each member of this family, which is important, for what is to come. . .

During Lara & Helen's 16th birthday party [in which Lara claimed she would rather be gay in Texas, than have a party] we come to realize that Lara genuinely despises her sister, who is little "miss popularity" during the party. After Lara is humiliated at the party, she retreats to her Anne Rice altar and performs an intricate voodoo ritual [which involves a "Margie doll" from "Toys R Mine" - copyright issues, I guess - and a calf's heart] At the end of the ritual, we learn that it is an Anal Acne Curse.

The next morning, Helen awakens with the worst nose-bleed EVER and then ends up dying [in a very emotional scene] in Lara's arms. Lara is filled with guilt and her mother [who is very religious] is filled with philosophical anguish.

Raymond, who was more curious than anything else, ended up taking a sample of Helen's blood [for research] and ended up determining that Helen died, not only from blood lost through her nose-bleed, but also because of red-blood-cells that were disappearing inside of Helen's body. This is apparently due to a new, unknown virus, which feeds on red-blood-cells and is still reproducing itself in Helen's blood.
After further study, Raymond discovers a vulnerability - the introduction of ultraviolet light!

Shortly after Helen's death, there is a knock at the door, and there is Helen standing outside, still wearing her white body bag, covered in blood. After Raymond takes a look at her, he determines that the blood is not hers. About this time, the police show up to inform the mother of Helen's body disappearing. Lara & Raymond quickly rush Helen downstairs to the basement. Here Raymond lets the family know that Helen's blood-cells are dying again, and will need to be replenished within the next 72 hours.

The family then realizes that they are going to have to kill, to feed their vampiric daughter. However, Helen refuses to feed, suffering through gut-wrenching blood withdrawals, until she blacks out and rips her victims to shreds!

Her first "human sacrifices" were a pair of Mormons who had stopped by, to spread their message of love. After Lara basically interrogated them both about their faith [as well as picturing them in their underwear, while they responded] the mother ended up poisoning their tea.

When we first see Helen feed, we see needle-thin fangs protrude from behind her teeth, right before she rips into her victim's throat.

Around two weeks later, we find out where some of the "sacrifices" are coming from and how the family goes about disposing of the bodies.

After about two months go by, the plot begins to thicken, with the introduction of a new character - Patrice Duchamps III - who seems to know that Helen is a vampire, and a lot about vampires [fledglings & pure-bloods] in general.

Which brings me to another underlying piece of this film, which I haven't discussed yet.
Interwoven within this film's story is the tale of Oya - the 1st vampire. Her story is told to Lara by the owner of a "cabinet of curiosities" type shop where she likes to hang out. He recently came across one of only 13 copies of Oya's illustrated biography. [Phil Messerer, the director, has a brief cameo as the guy who printed these copies]

Oya's tale goes back to the days of the Mayan empire, where she lived comfortably in a Mayan pyramid feeding off of their human sacrifices to her. However, after the Spanish army basically massacred the entire Mayan civilization, hunger drove Oya back out into our world. . .

I will definitely be looking forward to learning more of Oya's story, in the sequels [especially since her son was mentioned. . . Count Vlad [Dracula] perhaps?!?
Also, even Elizabeth Bathory was mentioned [and even shown briefly, in a scene portrayed by Ginger Stebbins] I'm not sure why, but I've always been fascinated by Bathory.

There is a huge reveal at the end of this film and a shocking ending!
Even though future sequels are planned, Messerer made a complete film here, explaining to us how Helen became a vampire, however some questions remain, such as - How did vampires come to be and what exactly are they in Messerer's mythology? I so cannot wait to find out!! :-)

There is so much more to tell [the only reason that I've told you this much, is so that you will at least remember something about it, when this film is finally distributed]

I didn't even get into the film's inspiration from American Beauty, nor did I discuss the film's outstanding soundtrack [an eclectic mix of music ranging from piano all the way through goth metal!]

Messerer has made a completely believable film here - one in which I was completely immersed in. He raised challenging, thought-provoking questions, and covers a range of emotions - ranging from funny to horrific! Messerer has proven that a film can be made, on a low budget, that rivals anything released out of Hollywood! [and as for the cast - every single person gave an Oscar worthy performance!]

This film has already received numerous awards [it is currently running the film-festival circuit] and rightly so. Once again, I hope that Messerer finds a worthy distributor for this film!

Thank you Phil, first of all for making this film, and secondly for sending me a screener copy.
This is, hands-down, the best independent film that I have ever had the pleasure of watching!

Jason
thebonebreakerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11304800728906814919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1195483501141308526.post-90936156565423807022009-01-25T23:01:00.001-08:002009-01-25T23:16:10.472-08:00Cheerbleeders Review by: The Bone Breaker

Today's film was sent to me by a director by the name of Peter Podgursky, and this just happens to be his thesis film for the University of Southern California.
Peter is currently the office manager for J J Abrams production company Bad Robot, and he counts, as mentors, such genre greats as John Carpenter, Joe Dante, Mick Garris, Stuart Gordon, and Chris Carter, as well as others.

Let's get on with the review, shall we?

The film starts off in Thebes, Greece - the year is 1933 - where we see an urn being secreted away. . . the film then jumps to the present day - the location is Blackfoot Highschool, in Idaho.
Here we meet Penny - the least popular girl in school - and her one and only friend Devon. [these two are the misfits of the school, and are looked on with disdain by the other students] Penny ends up showing Devon a mysterious urn that belonged to her great-grandfather. She tells him that it was found in his office, right after the locals had killed him. . .

Turns out that Penny is going to use the urn [and Devon] for a project in her history class. While giving her report, in front of the history class, Devon is laying on his back, and Penny is acting out a ritual that was used by the Cult of Dionysus. [if I remember correctly, Dionysus was the Greek god of madness, or some such thing - I vaguely remember an episode or two of Dionysus showing up in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys] :-)

After Penny is through with her report, a jock walks up and takes the urn, and pours its contents [thick, black, viscous sludge] all over Devon's face. . .

Turns out that Devon has somehow changed. When he walks by the girls in school, they immediately become infatuated by him. Once Devon realizes that these girls will do anything for him [including some rather humorous scenes] he soon comes to enjoy his new found popularity, seemingly ignoring Penny.

Of course Penny is not too happy about this, and upon doing some further research, she discovers that eventually Devon is going to lose control over the girls who are in his thrall.

This perfectly coincides with the fact that the school's homecoming football game is about to happen and Devon is planning some sort of blood orgy, which causes the enthralled girls to become demonically possessed - during their blood frenzy, they end up [literally] ripping the football team to shreds. [meanwhile everyone else is just standing by, watching nonchalantly!] :-)

Knowing that this isn't going to end well, Penny once more tries to talk some sense into Devon. When Devon asks her just who she thinks she is, she simply replies, "the least popular girl in school". Realizing that Devon is too blind to see what is happening, Penny decides to take matters into her own hands. . .

To see a trailer for the film, visit http://www.cheerbleeders.com/

For an 11-minute film, this one was perfectly paced and I thought that it was well written and well directed. It also had a very complimentary soundtrack to it, some of the music I will definitely be checking out myself! [for instance a band by the name of Teen Meanies - their song, Face Against the Wall played during the credits - very cool!

Thank you Peter, for sending me a screener of your film, and I will definitely be looking to see what you send our way next!

Jason
thebonebreakerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11304800728906814919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1195483501141308526.post-61356249498461463852009-01-23T22:39:00.000-08:002009-01-23T23:00:15.356-08:00Night of the Hell Hamsters & Eel Girl

Review by: The Bone Breaker

Directed by Paul Campion [who was a visual f/x artist on such films as The Lord of the Rings, Sin City, 30 Days of Night, Prince Caspian, Eragon, Fantastic Four 2, and X-Men 3, just to name a few] this 15-minute short will remind you of Peter Jackson's earlier works!

The film starts off with Julie [a babysitter] watching some sort of were-rabbit horror film. So, Julie decides to make her own, out of the kid's alphabet toys. [meanwhile Karl is poking at the children's hamster, in its cage, when it bites his finger] Karl meanders back over to Julie, to see what she's up to. Julie takes his bitten finger and squeezes out a drop of blood onto her home-made ouija board, christening it.

Julie & Karl then decide to summon forth a fictitious demon by the name of Spozgar. When the board starts to act on its own accord, and declares that Spozgar is there, lightning suddenly strikes the home and [coincidentally] strikes the hamster's cage, frying the little buggers inside.

Karl then goes over to investigate the dead hamsters, lifting the fried carcass of one up by its tail, when suddenly its eyes began to glow red and it attacks Karl, biting him on his nose/nostril.
Karl tosses the hamster away, only to have it scurry back and crawl up his pant leg!

Hilarity & horror ensues, especially when Karl's gnawed off finger [or penis - I really couldn't tell which, which my wife tells me is pretty sad - if it was indeed his penis...] falls to the floor.
Anyway, with Karl out of commission, Julie prepares to battle the demon possessed hamsters, tying her hair up, duct-taping her pant legs [smart!] and grabbing a frying pan and a butcher knife. .

I don't want to tell you anything more, as you need to see this one for yourself!
[I will tell you that one scene involves a cricket bat, which brought back memories of Shaun of the Dead!] Also, near the end, we find out that this situation has apparently become an epidemic [Julie receives a call from someone that guinea pigs ate their mother!] *Here's hoping for a sequel! :-)

For more information, be sure to visit http://www.nightofthehellhamsters.com/
Or you can go to http://www.indieflix.com/ to buy the DVD [which includes a "10-minute making-of feature] for only $5.95! There is another scientist in the room as well, and the scientist being informed begins to spout protocol [apparently it isn't a very good idea to be left in this room alone, for reasons you'll find out in just a few short minutes time!]

As soon as the other scientist leaves the room, the remaining scientist quickly begins to enter over-ride commands, calling forth the eel girl, to come into the room with the tub. We see a door open, and a webbed hand curl around its frame. Out of the darkness, the eel girl steps forth, completely naked. We see small fins on her forearms and gills in her cheeks. She slowly walks to the tub, and the scientist watches as she seductively slides into the thick, black liquid. As she lies in the tub, alarms begin to go off in the observation room, telling the scientist that her hormone levels are fluctuating. Distracted by the computer, the scientist does not see the eel girl get out of the tub and approach the glass window. . .

What happens next, you just have to see to believe!

All I know is that if this is what Paul Campion can accomplish in 5 minutes, I cannot wait to see what he will be able to do with a full feature!

For more information, you can visit http://www.eelgirl.net/

To my knowledge, Eel Girl is still going around the festival circuit and is not yet available to purchase, so a special thank you to Paul for sending me this one, as well as Night of the Hell Hamsters! I totally enjoyed this one, even more than I thought I would!
[I am not a huge fan of musicals - while I enjoyed Sweeney Todd, I would have to say that my favorite musical is/was Phantom of the Paradise, though Repo! may just replace that, I'm not yet quite sure. The director, Darren Lynn Bousman, is going to be in Milwaukee, this Friday evening, presenting this movie at a local theatre, so perhaps I'll make up my mind, after I've seen it on the big screen, with an actual audience]

The beginning of the film is shown comic-book style, letting us know that it is the not-too-distant future, where a mass epidemic of organ failures has taken place, causing death & chaos. Out of the turmoil, a savior emerges in the form of GeneCo. . .

There is also a singing narrator, if you will, in the character of the grave robber (played by co-writer Terrance Zdunich) The grave robber lets us know exactly what is going on, as do more comic-book illustration,s which provide us with flashback sequences.

The story is multi-layered, which really surprised me - there is a lot going on [which I do not want to discuss in-depth, as I do not want to ruin anything]
I will just tell you that the main character's are Shilo (Alexa Vega) and her father Nathan (Anthony Head) who, unknown to her, is a Repo man. Paul Sorvino plays Rotti Largo, owner of GeneCo. [there is a background history between Nathan & Rotti that is quite interesting indeed]

Bill Moseley, Paris Hilton, and Nivek Ogre play Rotti's three ungrateful children, who constantly bicker over who will run the company after Rotti's demise [he is sick]

Sarah Brightman plays Blind Mag, whose past is intertwined with Shilo's.

The grave robber is not only narrator, but also a drug dealer, who extracts his drug from the dead! [like I said, a lot going on! And I am happy to say that it all ties together quite nicely at the end!]

I loved everything about this movie, from the stellar sets, to the superior cast [especially Anthony Head - he was outstanding!]

This movie is destined to become a classic - I can see it playing, years from now, in midnight showings ala Rocky Horror Picture Show [which I have never seen by the way]
It is a shame that Lionsgate gave this film the same theatrical treatment that it gave The Midnight Meat Train - Hopefully it will do well on DVD. Definitely give this one a chance!!

Jason
thebonebreakerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11304800728906814919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1195483501141308526.post-71296464321222638202009-01-13T18:00:00.001-08:002009-01-13T18:08:16.556-08:00Tokyo Gore Police

Review by: The Bone Breaker

In the same vein as Iguchi's The Machine Girl [which, in my opinion, is a better movie] Tokyo Gore Police is a fast-paced gore fest!

The film starts off in a futuristic Japanese utopian society, where the police force is a corporation. At the very beginning of the film, the police are attempting to take out a chainsaw wielding maniac, when Ruka [who we find out is an "engineer hunter"] shows up. All of the action is taking place, high up in an abandoned building, so what does Ruka do? She takes a bazooka and places it, barrel-down against the ground, so that when she fires it, the force launches her up into the building. . . I kid you not - this is the type of insane, crazy action that fills this film! :-)

The film has excess amounts of arterial blood-spray [just wait till you see what Ruka does to a guy who grabs her butt!] and over-the-top gore! [If you enjoyed The Machine Girl, then you should have no problem with this film!]

There are also bizarre commercials interspersed throughout the film [think Robocop & Starship Troopers] These commercials however are out there! [for instance, there is one for stylish "wrist-cutters" that come in three different colors, and another one for remote control - think Wii - execution!]

What really sets this film apart though, are the "mutants"! Just to give you an idea, there is a girl with a penis for a nose - a snail girl - a woman with a crocodile mouth where her vagina should be - and a man whose penis is lopped off, and in it's place grows an enormous shotgun penis. . . I am not joking! [oh yeah, there is also a woman whose breasts squirt out acid!]

This is one warped film! [definitely not for the squeamish!]

Also, during the end credits, the film states: more gore coming soon [in case this excites anyone] :-)

Jason
thebonebreakerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11304800728906814919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1195483501141308526.post-3440686155652982532009-01-12T08:08:00.001-08:002009-01-12T08:20:21.932-08:00Splattered Beauty

Review by: The Bone Breaker

If you have already read Ford's first novel [Crystal Bay] then you already know what to expect from Ford, and he doesn't disappoint. Once again Ford has written another fast-paced novel, with believable characters and an interesting plot.

One of the things that I like about Ford is that he uses simplistic plots and characters to his advantage, turning them into thrilling stories. [He reminds me of a young Richard Laymon, and that is saying a lot, as Laymon is my all-time favorite horror author - simply for the fact that you can pick up any Laymon novel, without knowing anything at all about it, and you know that it is going to be good! Ford is pretty much the same way] I know that Ford only has two novels under his belt, but they are both great! So far, Ford is two-for-two! :-)

[Another interesting fact about Ford is that at a young age, 25 I believe, he set a goal for himself where he wants to have published a best-seller by the time he is 35 - I think that he is 27 now. Ford is definitely on his way to achieving this goal!]

In the Foreword of Splattered Beauty, Ford dedicates this book to Linnea Quigley "the ultimate Scream Queen, with a resume boasting over 90 films, and the longest scream in movie history." Also, Maria Ford, ("an underrated yet incredibly talented actress") Julie Strain, Debbie Rochon, Tiffany Shepis, Brinke Stevens, and the rest of the hard-working women of the horror industry. [the reason that I mention this is, if you are like me, then we can all relate to Ford's infatuation with Scream Queens]

With that said, in the character of Alyssa, Ford has created an actress who was once a Scream Queen at the top of her game. Now though, she has run into a bit of seemingly bad luck, until she meets an awe-struck fan, Taryn, at a horror convention where she was a guest celebrity. After meeting Taryn, things begin to look up for Alyssa, especially when a new, hot young writer/director wants to cast her as the villain in his new film - Splattered Beauty. However, things quickly spiral out of control when the role is given to her rival, Jessica, another up and coming actress.

Ford paints a vivid picture when depicting the murders that soon take place. They are brutal & graphic, yet your eyes remain glued to the pages! If you are looking for a great, fast read then look no further!

You can find the author, Brandon Ford on MySpace, at www.myspace.com/writerbrandonford

Jason
thebonebreakerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11304800728906814919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1195483501141308526.post-2613344860245458082009-01-05T12:51:00.000-08:002009-01-05T13:15:31.869-08:00Book Preview: The Absence
By: The Bone Breaker

Just an FYI that this book will be released on April 23rd.

I received an advance copy, and I just finished reading it. [in the film, we learn that Melpomene is a daughter of Zeus, and one of the nine muses. Melpomene is the Muse of Tragedy & Fear. She is the bridge between the soul and darkness. She is the Shaper of Nightmares. . . Tragedy brings her and Darkness sustains her]

Just as Dr. Smith and Falken face off, the films pans back and we realize that we have been watching a film within a film. The film is being watched by Josh, a video store clerk [whose attitude reminded me of Randal's from Clerks!] :-) We then learn that Josh is an aspiring musician who has become disillusioned with life, and who is obsessed with stories of The Dark Muse. [He watches the above mentioned film, reads comics about her, and even dreams of her.]
We then realize that Josh has become so obsessed that he begins to murder call girls, and buries them in an old, dilapidated drive-in movie theatre. Josh believes that each murder will bring him closer to summoning Melpomene.

Eventually, Josh meets Sara, a college student new to Josh's neighborhood, and as their friendship develops into a romance, Josh turns his back on Melpomene, until he realizes that Sara just may be the sacrifice that Melpomene demands. Killing call girls is not enough - Melpomene asks for true heartache, pain, and suffering. In the end, Josh must make the ultimate decision. . .

This is a micro-budget film that was shot in black & white, and I think that Terry West [the director] made the right decision here, as it has an "artistic feel" about it. One of the other things that I enjoyed is that some of the background information is given to us via a comic book layout/format - this is especially cool since this film is actually based on West's 1998 comic book series of the same name]

The only "reality fauxpas" that I want to mention is that of all the call girls that go to Josh's home, and end up being killed, you would think that his phone number or address would be red-flagged! :-) Other than that, the film is very well written, and it shows just what can be accomplished on a micro-budget! The film also has an excellent ending!!

As the title of this post suggests, "The Omega Edition" should be released sometime this month. It is basically a polished , re-vamped, re-cut version of the film that was released in 2001. Extra Features are yet to be announced. It focuses on a pregnant woman named Sarah who lost her husband in a terrible car accident. Four months pass and it is now Christmas Eve, she just wants to spend some alone time, awaiting the arrival of her unborn child. Later that evening she is stalked by a madwoman who knows a lot about her. The madwoman disappears after Sarah calls the police. The police leave, strongly believing that the woman won't came back and Sarah should be safe. The mad woman comes back and tries to kill Sarah, after that all hell breaks lose.

The movie starts off with a slow build, enabling the audience to get to know Sarah very well before she has to face her nightmare, fighting for her life and her unborn child's life while sustaining some nasty injuries. With great acting and well written dialogue (French with English subtitles) both female roles make a powerful impact to the story. The filming is very unique, where some scenes Sarah would fall or is attacked, it would switch to the baby shaking around inside of her womb actually feeling the distress that its mother was going through. There isn't much to the score, which sometimes can be a bit eerie, but where there is mostly silence, it adds a more realistic tone to the film's atmosphere. Although, there are some sound effects used only in scenes when Sarah is upset, or when the antagonist is growing more insane with each failed attempt to make her kill. These effects add to the disturbing feel and the uneasiness the film successfully invokes.

And the blood! There is so much blood in this movie you feel like you're drowning in it. During the film Sarah locks herself in the bathroom to protect herself from her attacker, giving room for other characters to come into the story, all try desperately to help her. This takes the story in a whole different direction, creating more intensity and then the body count begins to rise, leaving Sarah no choice but to fight back. Each scene of violence and gore left my jaw dropping, not giving me enough time to pick it back up.

Overall, Inside is an unforgettable horror movie. The characters are strong. The story is realistic and controversial. The gore and violence is as extreme as you can get. It's an intense film that will have you on the edge of your seat, and it'll keep you breathless all the way to its shocking conclusion.Horror Reviewshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07628212442189659250noreply@blogger.com1
